Chapter 29

Louise

Dan texts me. He’s outside. I slip out of bed and tiptoe through the shadowy apartment, anxious not to wake Joe. Actually, I’m surprised Joe didn’t go out tonight — he’s a Friday night clubber. Then again, Dan wasn’t going to come over, given that his flight was getting in so late, so Joe’s social plans were irrelevant. Until I texted Dan: I’m still awake if you want to call around.

We were going to catch up tomorrow. That was the plan. Then I realised that I was aching for him so much I wouldn’t sleep a wink.

His reply came within seconds: I’ve asked the taxi driver to do a U turn.

Wearing my pink and blue stripy cotton pyjamas, I open the front door as quietly as I can, and there he is in his dark suit and white shirt, looking a little crumpled from the flight. I fling myself into his arms. Neither of us says a word, we just stand there, hugging so tightly it’s quite hard to breathe.

‘Joe’s here …’ I whisper.

‘Typical,’ he retorts, his voice too loud.

‘Ssshhh …’

He comes inside, softly closing the door behind him. Holding hands, stifling giggles, we stealthily make our way to my room. As soon as the bedroom door is shut, we’re in each other’s arms again. Which one of us thought it was feasible to wait until tomorrow?

‘I missed you so much,’ he says between kisses. His hands, cool from the outside air, slide inside the top of my pyjamas.

‘Me too.’ It seems lacking, my response, but I can’t think of anything else to say, anything that would adequately describe just how desperately I missed him.

His fingers find my nipples, teasing them until they’re hard little buttons, and it’s all I can do not to moan out loud.

‘I missed your breasts.’ His breath is hot in my ear. It sends a spike of desire right through the centre of my body. ‘And I missed this.’ His hand slips inside the waistband of my pyjamas, between my legs. This time I can’t help it, I moan, a wanton sound in the stillness of the night. God, I hope Joe cannot hear.

Within moments we’re in bed, naked, our clothes on the floor, to be recovered sometime tomorrow. Greedily, I luxuriate in his body, the solidness of his torso, his narrow hips as they fuse with mine. I missed the smell of him, the mix of his own Dan smell and the traces of sandalwood in his aftershave. I missed the leathery feel of the skin on his thighs. I missed how my muscles inadvertently squeeze when he’s inside me, how that makes him the one who can’t help moaning, the frenzy, the complete loss of self as we both hurtle towards a climax.

Afterwards, lying spooned in his arms, I smile as I whisper, ‘I would be quite amazed if Joe didn’t hear that.’

‘The only way to wake that boy is to whack him with a boot,’ Dan replies dryly.

‘You tired?’

‘Exhausted.’ He yawns. I can’t see his face, but I think he may have closed his eyes.
